Self-portrait in Pencil, 2006

These four self-portraits mark the start of my artistic career in terms of applied visual arts and were produced back in 2006 in Harare. At the time I was in the vegetable sales business moving three tonnes of tomatoes a day to Greater Harare as well as variously cabbages and potatoes. I had recently returned from Cape Town in mid-2005, via Namibia, on one of my many trips to South Africa going back to family holidays from early childhood onwards. In Cape Town in 2005 I had, through friends and their contacts, done nude modelling for various artists and art students to earn my bread and butter and keep off the streets. This demanding occupation proved instrumental on my subsequent interest in fine art especially my passion for painting and drawing leading up to the present as an active artist in my own right. It’s a miracle that they have been relatively well preserved in between moving house and country at various points over the years – to now find an online audience here on my hard-won dotcom.
